I always have music on at work....often times I listen to an "oldies" station. The other day the song, "Johnny Angel" came on. If you are my age....you can probably sing the entire song...word for word. Click here to watch and listen.
As the song played, I closed my eyes and leaned back in my chair. For a brief moment I was 10 years old again. Our house back then had a beautiful corner fireplace. There was a ledge about a foot high that ran the length of the fireplace....that made the perfect stage....and then the best thing ever.....two spot lights in the ceiling that shined down on the little blond haired girl pretending to be Shelley Fabares....the beautiful singing star of television fame.
Grasping my invisible microphone...I would take the "stage" and sometimes sing and other times lip sinc to that song....over and over and over again. It's so funny because just listening to it almost makes me want to cry. It's just one of those things that can so easily take me back to a very precious time in my life. Are there little things like a song or a place or a book that can sweep you back to your childhood like that?
Johnny Angel.....how I love him...how I tingle when he passes by......every time he says hello, my heart begins to fly.......

Oh, definitely. I always marvel at the power of music, language, smell and taste to take me back to different times in my life. I used to love Johnny Angel... Have a wonderful day!! Love, Silke
Well, I know every word to that song, too! lol... I loved the oldies station growing up. :)
So true! When I was growing up I took a social dancing class, which meant we got to hold hands with boys and wear prissy dresses. My favorite song to dance to was "Blue Velvet" by Bobby Vinton. I always felt like a princess when that song played and to this day it gives me goosebumps!
This post made me smile. Yes, I do have those sort of memories. I remember Johnny Angel well.
I've always loved how music can transport you to another time, and the memories last a long time.
You tell it well, Kathy.
xo
Great post...it is amazing how a song or smell can transport you back in time.
Yes! Music is the fabric of my life and I remember Johnny Angel well. How fun. I Love the "oldies."
I love the oldies station and Johnny Angel is one of my favorites. Sometimes I get just a slight wisp of a scent and it will take me back to another time and place. Funny how that happens.
Awwww....For me it was The Supremes. I wanted to be a back up singer for a girl band sooo badly--and wear my hair big and a satin dress. Alas. I cannot sing. And those girl bands don't exist anymore.
Love the oldies and their ability to stir positive memories, fun times...I also like that they aren't laced with vulgarity, ie, rap and its cousins.

The smell of Noxzema always takes me back to my teen years. It doesn't make me nostagic though. Being an overweight teenager with complexion problems in the 50's wasn't that much fun.
The restaurant where I work has that power over people. It has been there since before I was born. There was a movie theater next door and generation after generation grew up eating at our restaurant then going to the movie afterward. (even me!) I can't tell you how many people walk through the doors and say :"I haven't been here in x number of years. It smells/tastes just the same..." I like how you can see them transport themselves back in time. It is sort of like their eyes glaze over just a bit.
That song and so many others!! I would use a yard stick, pen or just about anything!! Oh those were the days!!
I don't know all of the words (my older sister used to play it) but I knew immediately what song you were talking about. LOL - there are a lot of songs from the 60s that I know the words to.
I love the oldies but we don't have an oldies station here. Bummer... Also - now kids think the "oldies" are songs from the 80s and 90s.
