Mirror, Mirror On The Wall

When you look in the mirror....what do you see?

Sometimes I can be boppin' around the house, listening to my music and I will catch my reflection in the mirror and say, "Holy shit! Who is that person?" That can't be me! That lady is old and wrinkled. She has jowls and droopy eyelids. She's saggy and baggy and looks so "weathered". Her hair is so gray.....no, that can't be me!"

And then...there is the grin. The wrinkles around the eyes appear deeper. The sides of the mouth curl up and become a big smile. HAHA! It is me! It's me, Kathy and hell yeh...I AM wrinkled. I'm 57 years old! Those jowls....just like my dad's and his mom's and those droopy eyelids....just like my mom's.

Sure I'm "weathered". Up until 10 years ago, I worshipped the sun. My hair...what happened to my hair? Oh yeah, that's right...I stopped coloring it to avoid those darn chemicals!

Another grin, another smile and then a laugh...Hmmmmm...yep, that's me.....and then off I go boppin' to the music again.

Our bodies and faces tell the stories of our lives don't they?

Aubrey wrote this one song with a line in it that says "The line in his face says he's been many places..." so true.

Before my mom passed away, she was very ill. I would have to help her with her bath. I couldn't help but notice her scars. She had a big one on her knee that brought back a wonderful memory of us riding bikes when I was a child. She also had the stretch marks on her tummy from carrying my brother and I. Even the scars from her surgery to remove her breast when she had breast cancer showed that she was a fighter. The smile lines around her eyes showed what a happy person she was and how much she loved life.

So, I think scars and wrinkles are a good thing!

Amen and Amen! I like to say that I earned every single wrinkle that I have and I'm not trading them for anything.

I have the "Holy, shit!" moment all the time...It's not how old we look in the mirror, it's how young we feel in our hearts! And you will be forever young! Hope I am, too!

My only regret is how much time I wasted not looking at myself before the platinum locks and added pounds arrived. I would not trade the confidence and joie de vivre of my 30's for all the taught abs and flawless skin of years' previous...okay, well perhaps I'm fibbing, but only a little!

Great post Kathy!
