Well it's almost here...St. Patrick's Day....one of my least favorite holidays. Oh, I enjoy the color green and the Shamrocks and even the creepy little leprechauns. What I don't like is how the holiday here in the U.S. is little more than another excuse for people to get drunk. I know there are people that probably celebrate responsibly, but all I hear is how great it is because you have an excuse to get drunk. Oh yippee!
I have read that St. Patrick's Day in Ireland is a day of spiritual renewal. Prayers are offered for missionaries world wide, businesses close and many people attend mass. If any of you are Irish...is that all still true today? That does NOT sound like St. Patrick's Day around here. Why in the Windy City we even dye our river green!
At work we are having a potato bar. That will be nice. We put up some decorations in our office and those are cute. At home, I don't decorate and we won't have a special Irish meal. I feel like such a party pooper. Am I the only one out there there doesn't jump up and down and say,"Oh yeah, it's St. Patrick's Day? How about you? Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day?

Not a big deal for me. Once before we became parents hubby and I went to a restaurant and drank some green beer. Now it's another ho-hum day.
When my mother and grandmother were alive it was a big deal holiday in our house, decorations, corned beef cabbage dinner and all....and yes, drinking and toasting were involved in a huge family festive party. we don't do anything for it now, though i believe my sister still has a party at her house. i don't even cook the dinner because we don't particularly like it. my mother loved it so much it feels funny to do it without her and it's been over 10 years now....i think the leprechauns went with her ;-)
Hi Kathy, not being irish this is not a big deal for us, but in lots of cities there will be parades and people will wear anything green. Like you I hate the culture today that says everyone has to get drunk to enjoy themselves, but not everybody does that and it's lovely to see the irish dancing the little girls look so pretty, there is a big parade in Birmingham England.
Love Jillxx
I sometimes put green costumes on our little dogs and snap a few photos. And I enjoy 'wearing of the green' in order not to be pinched, but that's about as far as we take it.
I did see on the news last night that Chicago dyed the river green. The news guy said the recipe for the dye is a HUGE secret. Didn't really understand why it would be.
I wear green, but it's not really anything i get excited for. Maybe I'd feel different if I were of Irish decent, but it's just another day for me!
I do not. I think it's funny how many people do, though! Must be because March has no other holidays!
I'm not Irish so did not grow up in the St. Paddy's Day culture. However, I do enjoy the festivities. It's not been my impression that drinking to get drunk rules the party. Or even that there's much drinking. People seem responsible.
I never decorate or celebrate St Patrick's Day. Easter isn't too far off and it's far more fun to decorate with bunnies and chicks and the colors of Spring.
I'll wear green and give you a "Top o' the mornin'" to ya, but I won't drink or eat potatoes. :D
Just another day for me however I'll probably wear something green, after all it is my favorite color!
Last year I was in Ireland on St. Patrick's Day. Went to Dublin and attended the parade! It was wild but mostly tourests!! Most everything is closed except resturants. If it is cold enough I will wear a green sweater if not well them what ever.
No celebration here, but I do make an effort to wear something green that day. I guess I should, with half Irish in me.
Hi Kathy, :) Off topic but I was just here and copied the URL to send to you.
