What Would You Do?

I had my last bone density screening done a year ago. The report says Osteopenia, but I do have one vertebra that is in the Osteoporosis range. My gynecologist gave me a prescription to go have a follow up one done now.

Here is my dilemma. I am just starting a program to increase my bone density. Up until now I have done nothing to correct the situation. If it were you, would you skip having it done now, wait a year and then have it done to see what it is....or would you go have another one now before you started the program?

Up until this week, I had decided that I would NOT have another one done at this time. My reasoning was that since I haven't done anything to make it better, it is going to be worse. If it's a lot worse, it might actually frighten me and I'm feeling pretty good and pretty peaceful about the whole situation right now. So, do I just wait until next year and see where I'm at after a year on the program or......

do I go have a new screening done so I know exactly what my numbers are right now before I start the full program? If I don't get it done now, next year when I do, I really won't know how much my numbers have improved on the new program because I won't know my starting point. Am I making sense?

I called my insurance company and they will pay for it so I'm thinking I need to go have it done. I want to know next year if my program is working and if it is....how well is it working. If I don't go.....I won't know.

Would you go or would you rather not know? I'm going.

I would probably go. A year is not a long time so if the change is drastic you'll know it is moving quickly. If not, if it is not too different then you will know that it is more or less stable. When I went for my first mammogram after breast cancer and a mastectomy I was really nervous. And...I needed a biopsy....and....I was fine and have been fine ever since but some days I think I'll skip the next mammogram....but then, I'd rather know what is or isn't going on....good luck! I think I am due one of those bone density tests soon--my last was good but it was a while ago...

I think your reasoning in the last paragraph worked it out. I agree, I'd have it done then you'll have a marker.

I think I would go and have the test as a starting point. The test is easy and if the insurance company is willing to pay for it, I say go for it.

I would go too, Kathy. It will be the best measure of your new program at this time next year. And, I really wouldn't worry about what the test says as you are on your way to changing things.

I would go. I know it's a bit scary but, you are feeling really healthy at the moment so that makes you strong and you will also have a marker to see how well you have done after a year so go girl.

I would go. That way you have a baseline to judge your program off of. Otherwise, you might not be able to tell if it's working.

I would also go - that way you have an official starting point with which to compare the next one to.

I'd definitely go.

I agree--stay on top of it so you know if you're improving. Best wishes on your test!

You've done so much to be an informed patient. I say have the test!

I think you answered your own question. Go so you have the comparison. You'll be glad you did a year from now.

xo

PS I get one every year.

Based on what you said in your post, I would get it done. Knowing what I know about how you think from your prior articles, it sounds like you research things well before making a decision.
