When Old Friends Part

Did you ever love something so much that even when it was really old and really ratty looking and in very, very bad shape and you even got a new one to replace the old one...that you still could not bear to throw it away?

These are my beloved old slippers. My old slippers have holes in the bottoms, there are holes on the tops where little bows use to be, they have little splats of paint of them and they are just plain old wore out....and yes, I was still wearing these on a daily basis.

These are the new slippers I asked for and received for Christmas. My new slippers are beautiful. They are blue and soft and comfy and clean.

I started wearing my new slippers on Saturday. My old slippers were laying on the floor of my workshop. I actually picked them up and put them on one of the shelves because I didn't want Maggie to get them and chew them up. Have you ever heard anything so ridiculous? Chew them up? Look at the things!

I must admit that being a person that loves to reuse old things, I've been looking at them trying to think of a way I might be able to use them for something, but nothing is coming to mind.

So, today I am going to dig deep and I am going to throw my old slippers in the garbage. It's going to be sad as it always is when old friends part, but I think I can do it.

Have you ever had something you just can't part with? Spill it....I need some encouragement today.

LOL! i so hear this ;-)

whenever i have to let something beloved go i toss it with a little gusto and sometimes even a bit of ribbon or wrapping and thank it for being in my life--sort of like a blessing and a gratitude offering all in one.

I have my hole-y shirt. I can only wear it in the house but I refuse to throw it out because it is so comfortable. You could always frame the slippers and keep them in your workshop as a wonderful memory!

Ok--you got me. I have my very holey, very worn Gramma's shirt. It was the shirt she wore the last time she and I had dinner. It's literally falling apart and I can't bear to throw it out. Every thing else I can toss with a sense of glee but I can't toss my Gramma's shirt.

Pack away your slippers until your new ones have been broken in and feel as comfortable as old friends. Then you will be able to "let go" of the old pair. :D

Absolutely! I have several t-shirts and sweatshirts that are soooooo comfy, but they're old, faded and stained. My wife is always reminding me that they need to go.

I used to hang on to just about everything. Lately I've had a desire to Simplify...(yes, I think of it with a capital letter!) so I've been getting rid of a lot. I started by donating things in decent shape that someone else can use, and that made it easier to get rid of worn-out things. (Of course, there's always that little voice saying "maybe you'll want this"...but I like having more space!

To answer your last question: Yes, I get very attached to things and find it difficult to part with them.

Lately, I've started to take photos of older loved items, maybe if I have a memento it'll be easier to get rid of them.

Isn't it funny ow we get attached to things that bring us comfort. But trust me, I have a pair of slipper like you news one-- before you know it you will LOVE them just as much as the old ones.

You have hit upon one of those universal truths. Not just clothing, either. Yesterday I was cleaning out the shed and struggling with throwing out an old broken rake handle -- "Maybe this will come in handy sometime..."

Is that a sign of growing older? I used to get annoyed with my mother who saved EVERYTHING. Now I find that the urge to do it keeps sneaking up on me. What to do?

Told you there'd be more comments from me tonight. It is so funny you should post about house shoes. I almost did that Tuesday. Being the klutz that I am I tripped over one of my houseshoes and it flipped over. I haven't looked at the bottoms. After all, I walk on them. Surprise! Surprise! A huge hole in the heel. So I looked at the other one. Same thing! We were going to Wallyworld that day so I HAD to pick up a new pair. Wonder if the new ones will last another 7 or 8 years? No joke! My other houseshoes were at least that old.
